What is Calico Works?

Calico Works is an award-winning, full-service production company that develops and produces original and innovative content for film, television and new media. These include narrative films, documentaries, music videos, and commercials of all sizes and purposes. Feel free and mosey over to the work section and check some of it out!

Ok, we want to know more. Specifically who, where, when, why, and how?

Calico Works was founded on a simple principle – never release anything unless it’s fucking fresh. On a cold night in November of 2000, founders and friends Danny Lee and Brent Stangel realized they had all of the resources to create compelling film/video content themselves. Not to mention they went to school for such things. This set the wheels in motion for their first collaboration, the groundbreaking film Rock Fresh, a feature documentary about graffiti artists making the leap from the street to the mainstream. The film world premiered at the AFI Fest 2004, and was subsequently acquired by Showtime. The film also enjoyed a broad domestic and international DVD release. Shortly thereafter, Jeramiah Wainright and Gene Lee came on board to round out the crew.

How do you guys see the future of entertainment?

People can speculate endlessly. Our viewing practices are certainly changing. But in terms of what we watch, that will always vary. Entertainment is an ebb and flow industry like any other. When people tire of the explosions they’ll for the independent fare. When every film is an obscure morality tale about why we eat 3 times a day, people will yearn for the popcorn flick. But in all seriousness, the real future lies with the dude from Kansas sticking firecrackers up his ass.

New York City.

Hollywood, California.

What’s behind the name Calico Works?

We like to take a colorful approach to filmmaking - including, but not necessarily limited to the colors of white, black and orange. Don’t laugh.

Sometimes.

The French New Wave, German Expressionism, American Renaissance.
